‘Make the best of the winter’: Bust the Winter Blues starts Friday

While the chill of winter can make us all want to cuddle up with our good friend Netflix, there’ll be plenty to draw locals off the couch and out the door this weekend.

While the chill of winter can make us all want to cuddle up with our good friend Netflix, there’ll be plenty to draw locals off the couch and out the door this weekend.

Bust the Winter Blues, an annual winter festival, will be held this Friday, March 4 to Sunday, March 6.

The festival is co-organized by the City of Flin Flon, Town of Creighton and Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre, with some community clubs organizing select events.

“It’s about trying to make the best of the winter,” said Channa Senyk, recreation director for the Town of Creighton.

“We want to remind people that you can have fun outside in the winter time.”

Senyk said the Rotary Wheel is likely to be a popular destination for families on Saturday afternoon, with horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowshoe races, snow golf and a sugar shack where kids can experience a truly Canadian sweet: taffy made from maple syrup poured on snow.

With the weather report predicting rising temperatures this weekend, Senyk hopes the outdoor activities will attract a good crowd. For those who would rather stay indoors, there will still be plenty to do, with a craft sale, card games and  a cribbage tournament.

Adults can test their knowledge at Friday’s Trivia Night and Social, organized by the Flin Flon Kinette Club, and families can celebrate together at the Mardi Gras Family Fun Night at the Creighton Community Hall on Saturday night.

The weekend will also include a pancake breakfast, a fireworks display, a free public skate, a snowmobile derby and a family fishing tournament.

Senyk said Creighton has worked with the Friendship Centre and Flin Flon since 2003. Before that, the town ran its own winter festival.

She said the partnership benefits everyone.

“Doing it together makes lighter work for everyone, and you have more partners and volunteers.”
