The sight of Mayor Dennis Ballard flipping burgers at the City Garage yesterday induced plenty of smiles. But his reason for being there was no lighthearted matter. The garage was the site for a special city luncheon in commemoration of the National Day of Mourning for all workers who have been killed or injured at work. About 40 past and present city employees joined representatives from the United Steelworkers of America, enjoying burgers, hot dogs and soda. Following the hearty meal, Mayor Ballard spoke about the importance of the National Day of Mourning, calling it a time for people to unite. "I hope we can do this every year," he said, adding that the turnout impressed him. Other familiar faces in attendance included members of city council, Fire Chief Jim Petrie, and the friendly ladies who residents see behind the counter at City Hall.
