Northern Manitoba received good news yesterday with the announcement that the United States would cut punitive duties on Canadian software lumber imports starting in January. A Canadian trade official announced that the U.S. Commerce Department would cut in half the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties imposed on billions of dollars in lumber shipments to under 13 per cent. However, sources said the final determination on the matter will not come until December. The United States has reportedly collected about $2 billion in such duties over the last two years. The duties have offset previous rulings that accused Canada of illegally subsidizing lumber production and Canadian companies of selling wood at unfairly low prices in the U.S. market.
