MTS Allstream turned up its 4G LTE wireless network in Flin Flon yesterday.
The upgrade will allow customers to tap into the full capacity of their smartphones with data speeds up to seven times faster than the previous HSPA-plus technology.
Additionally, some of the upgrades being made may result in higher speeds for Flin Flon customers who access the Internet through a home computer or other wireline connection.
No new names
There is still time to declare, but so far George Fontaine and Robin James are the only candidates in the running to become the next mayor of Flin Flon.
Fontaine, the first-term mayor, won a landslide victory in 2010. James ran for mayor in 1998, 2002 and 2006, enjoying only marginal support.
Time for action
Churchill MP Niki Ashton is renewing calls for a national inquiry into Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
This comes after the body of Tina Fontaine 15, of northern Manitoba’s Sagkeeng First Nation was recently found in the Red River in Winnipeg.
“What is clear is that we need to get to the root causes [of the issue], address the disproportionate levels of poverty, end the violence and ultimately reform the system that enables it,” Ashton said.
Fatal rollover
A 47-year-old man from southern Manitoba has died after the pickup truck he was driving rolled near Wabowden. Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, Wabowden.
RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 6 in the Setting Lake area of northern Manitoba. Initial investigation showed the vehicle hit the shoulder of the road before rolling and landing on its roof.
New directors
VMS Ventures has appointed Gary Ostry and Wes Roberts to its board of directors.
Ostry has 40 years of experience in the resource sector and is currently registered as a professional geoscientist in Manitoba. Roberts is a mineral engineering consultant with more than 30 years of experience in mineral exploration, mining operations, project engineering and management.
Along with Hudbay, VMS co-owns the Reed mine between Snow Lake and Flin Flon.
