Jonathon Naylor Editor Creighton will give major consideration to opening up new residential lots as town council begins assembling its upcoming budget. The town of 1,500 is down to one residential lot _ and it's small by today's standards _ as demand persists despite a declining area population. 'It's something that we need to look at very seriously here, very soon,' said Mayor Bruce Fidler, 'because we basically have no lots left available in Creighton for housing development and we know there is a market there. There are people interested in coming to Creighton and building or moving a house in, so we do need to expand.' Collins Street Fidler said the most new lots could be opened by extending Collins Street. 'We have a few (other) spots around where we could get one or two (lots in), but that would be our main concentration there,' he said. Already in 2012 Creighton has received two serious requests for residential lots that could not be met. Seventeen new homes have been built in the town since 2006, many of them on Collins Street and large and luxurious by local standards. While he places great importance on residential expansion, Fidler does not know whether the necessary funding will be available in 2012. 'I can't say if it will get into this year's budget plans,' he said. 'It may have to wait until next year, but it is something we are going to start looking at very soon.' See 'Flin...' on pg. 6 Continued from pg.1 Across the border, the City of Flin Flon has about a dozen lots it considers to be prime residential sites that include utility connections. Flin Flon's list of available properties is currently under review, however, and that number could rise or fall slightly as a result. Between 2007 and the fall of 2010, 17 new homes were built in Flin Flon. Figures for 2011 were not immediately available. As is the case in Flin Flon, the overall budgeting process in Creighton remains in the early stages. 'We're starting the preliminary (work), putting our wish list together type of thing,' Fidler said at last week's town council meeting. Fidler said each department within the town will come up with lists of priorities, and council will 'separate the needs from wants and go from there.' The mayor said it's too early to know whether council will go to Creightonites for a tax increase. 'We're just getting into the process now,' he said. 'Hopefully we don't have to, but we'll just wait and see (how) our wish list turns out.' The budget must be forwarded to the Saskatchewan government by April. Creighton has not raised its residential mill rate since 2007. The town decreased the rate in 2009 in recognition of the fact that property values increased. Meanwhile, with a large volume of snow this winter, the town is reminding the public of the laws surrounding snow removal. Among those rules: snow cannot be pushed onto the streets. In cases where snow is pushed onto a street and the town removes it for safety reasons, the offending homeowner can be billed for the cost.
