Flin Flon and The Pas are looking for votes in the annual Aviva Community Fund project. 'Solving The Cat-astrophy!' is Flin Flon's project in hopes of helping the Flin Flon/Creighton & Area SPCA. Flin Flin is listed as a small budget (up to $50K) and had received 444 votes as of last Thursday afternoon. An overview of the local shelter was submitted to the Aviva Community Fund and read as follows: Twelve years ago a dedicated group of people recognized a great need in our community and surrounding area for an animal shelter. Our first meeting came about after several instances of animal abuse _ something we, as caring individuals could no longer ignore. And so was born the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA. We operate as a registered charitable organization. Ten long years of continuous fund raising _ all the while caring for as many needy cats and dogs through foster care as we could handle _ resulted in a dream come true. A brand new shelter was built and we held our grand opening on Sept. 29, 2012. The past year has been a busy one for us. Every day we operate at almost full capacity. Our community and the surrounding area have been so generous towards us for which we are very grateful. We do our best to 'give back' by giving shelter to the neediest group of cats and dogs _ the ones actually out on the streets, hungry, cold and sick and the unclaimed ones in the local pound. School kids make regular visits to learn about animal welfare and through school programs with the high school, teens can get first hand experience in caring for pets through volunteer work with us. We offer a subsidized spay/neuter program which grows with each passing year. Just this past week our shelter manager and a member of the board of directors made a trip to Saskatoon to take part in the Saskatchewan SPCA's Animal Welfare Conference. One of the main topics discussed was the cat overpopulation problem which exists coast to coast. It touches us here in the North as well. In The Pas, voters are after upgrades to the 400-metre Running Track through the Kelsey Recreation Commission and Kelsey School Division. As of Thursday afternoon, The Pas held 586 votes. The outdoor track is in the large budget category ($100k-$150k). The Pas also had 394 votes for their Outdoor Skating Rink _ in the medium budget ($50k-$100k) category. Round 1 of the voting began Sept. 30 and will carry through until October 14. Round 2 of the competition is set for Oct. 21 until Nov. 4 as the final round will start Nov. 11.
