Jonathon Naylor Editor A year after a blaze reduced their anchor building to rubble, the owners of Bakers Narrows Lodge are still pondering what to do with the vacant land left behind. The lodge has continued to operate without the familiar building, which housed a restaurant, gift shop, gas pump and convenience store. 'We are in the planning stages only for what we feel we could put there,' Peg Baynton, whose family owns the lodge, wrote in an e-mail. Since the fire, the Bayntons have rebuilt a number of facilities necessary to the function of the lodge, including a new laundry facility and a washroom and showerhouse. Prominent The anchor building was perhaps the most prominent component of the lodge, but it was just one part of a much larger business. The early-morning fire of Feb. 4, 2012, caused no injuries, as the building was closed. An investigation found the cause of the blaze to be undetermined, but not suspicious. It is believed to have started in the upper part of the building. Flin Flon firefighters initially spent 14 hours at the scene, but the building was too far gone to salvage. Left standing amid the blackened rubble were two side walls, which were later removed along with the rest of the debris. The fire department estimated total damages at close to $1 million, making the blaze one of costliest in the history of the Flin Flon area.
