Once more, 24 avid quilters met for a fun-filled weekend recently at Bakers Narrows Lodge. The Quilting with Friends Second Annual Quilt Retreat was held May 3-5 at Bakers Narrows Lodge. We had nine participants from The Pas, seven from Flin Flon, seven from Cranberry Portage and Wendy van der Walt of Fabriculous, a quilt, yarn and craft shop. in Swan River. Van der Walt brought with her an array of fat quarters, bolts, books, notions, patterns and display quilts. You may have missed some great deals if you were unable to come out and check her mini store. The event was again organized by Sandra Buchberger of Cranberry Portage and Sue Harper of The Pas, and they ended up teaching the class when Marie Minaudier of St. Claude, Man., had to cancel due to medical reasons. The quilters had a choice of a table runner 'Midnight Flowers' or the 'Maple Leaf with Flying Geese,' which could be made into a table topper, a quilt or a bag. Both of these paper piecing patterns were designed and provided by Minaudier. The food prepared by the lodge was delicious and the cabins cozy. We all sewed to our hearts' content, visited with friends old and new, had lots of laughs and some even managed to complete their projects. Some of us went walking and we also worked in stretching exercises with the help of Fran Cooper of The Pas to relieve 'quilter's tension.' The hot tub was also a source of relaxation. Throughout the retreat draws were made for the penny parade items. A fat quarter with a children's theme was provided by many of the quilters and after a vote it was decided that either an individual or a group would receive all of them to make a quilt to be given to a charitable organization for a fundraiser, or given to a child in need. Names were submitted, a draw made and the group receiving the fat quarters consisted of Sandra Buchberger, Sue Harper and Sheila Leclerc. The door prize consisting of fat quarters in shades of beiges, grays and blacks and quilting notions was won by Wendy Gregoire of The Pas. Draws were also made for a basket of quilting goodies, provided by Minaudier, which was won by Joyce McLennan of Cranberry Portage. A floor standing cross-stitch stand made by Don Kostiuk was won by Marg Patience of The Pas and the lap cross-stitch stand was won by Joyce McLennan. 'Show and Tell' was held Saturday night for anyone to show off quilts and knickknacks they had previously made. Great Show! Sunday morning, a display of our weekend projects took place and after a tasty lunch it was time to pack up, say goodbye and head home.
