A Flin Flon RCMP officer is facing assault charges after a prisoner was allegedly 'mishandled' last summer. Cst. Jamie O'Brien was charged last week with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. In a news release, the RCMP said it was alleged that a member of the Flin Flon detachment 'mishandled' a male prisoner on Aug. 30, 2012. The release did not specify the nature of the alleged mistreatment. Investigation When the allegation first surfaced eight days later, on Sept. 7, RCMP said the Flin Flon detachment commander 'immediately' launched an investigation. The findings of the investigation were subsequently forwarded to Manitoba Justice for review by a Crown attorney. Based on recommendations from Manitoba Justice, Cst. O'Brien was charged a week ago, on July 22. Cst. O'Brien has been suspended with pay while the internal RCMP investigation process continues. He is scheduled to appear in court in Flin Flon on Oct. 3. Cst. O'Brien joined the Flin Flon RCMP in 2009, fresh off of graduating from RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Regina.
