A busy June for Creighton RCMP included almost 200 calls to the authorities.

In Creighton, 76 calls came in, with two assaults reported, including an assault on officers. Charges were laid after police responded to a 911 call and aggressors attacked the officers.

“No tolerance will be given to members being assaulted,” reads the Creighton RCMP report, obtained by The Reminder and discussed at the July 10 Creighton town council meeting.

Two thefts, including a stolen vehicle, were reported. The vehicle was later recovered in Denare Beach. The second theft involved someone stealing a “large quantity” of candy from a Creighton business.

Eighteen liquor offences were reported, as well as six impaired driving cases.

In May, RCMP responded to four cases in Creighton. None were reported in February and one was reported in April.

At the July 10 Creighton town council meeting, Sgt. Sean McPhee said the time of year played a role in the spike in some offences. With the Trout Festival, Canada Day celebrations, high school graduations and events like family and high school reunions, numbers for some offences can spike in June.

“The number is high, but the numbers will spike when there’s something going on. It’s the nature of the beast,” said McPhee.

“It was a busy June for us in the area. It is what it is.”

Out of 15 mischief calls reported, all but one involved alcohol. The lone exception involved someone breaking a window of a grader owned by Saskatchewan Highways.

Most of the calls came from the Denare Beach area – 111 in total. Eight assaults were reported in the community, including one assault on an officer.

After an intoxicated person was reported to be yelling at a house, RCMP members attended the scene. One officer was assaulted by the person, who was pepper sprayed and taken into custody.

A domestic assault was also reported, with charges being laid in the matter.

Charges were also laid after an offender threw a cup of coffee in a person’s face.

Other matters, including multiple fistfights, were also reported.

One break and enter was reported, in which a television was taken from a travel trailer.

Mischief calls were also a major theme throughout the month, with 38 calls reported in Denare Beach alone. Most involved intoxicated people unwilling to leave properties. One case involved someone throwing a piece of wood through a glass window at a residence. After going through the window, the board hit a child inside the home. Charges were laid.

Other cases involved a window being broken, a boat cover being ripped, tampering to a power meter and intoxicated people shouting in the streets.

Five files were reported from Sturgeon Landing, including an assault with a weapon. Officers responded to the scene, but said people involved in the crime have been unwilling to cooperate.

One break-and-enter was reported. An assailant allegedly damaged a door and stole beer from a home. An instance of uttering threats and two 911 calls were also reported.

“This was a busy month for Sturgeon Landing,” reads the RCMP report. In a typical month, only one or two calls are made from the community to RCMP.

“The events all had alcohol as a common ground.”
