The Flin Flon Lions Club has received provincial recognition in honour of its work to enhance the lives of seniors. The Manitoba Council on Aging has given the club an honourable mention in its recognition awards category. "The club is very thrilled about the awarding of the honourable mention," said Wayne Streamer, club president. "We just go and do our thing, and recognition is not something that we're seeking. But now that it's going to be awarded to us, we're quite happy to receive this recognition of the work that the club does." Lion Roger Poirier is scheduled to be in Winnipeg this Friday to accept the award on behalf of his club. The Lions plan to keep the award in its display case at the Green Room of the Flin Flon Community Hall, where club meetings take place. The Lions Club serves the community in a number of ways, but work with seniors has always been a major focus. The club purchased the Handi-van, used by seniors to travel around the community, and the Lifeline system, which allows the elderly to push a portable button to notify the hospital if they require medical aid. The Lions also buy Christmas gifts for residents of the Personal Care Home and sing for the seniors at the Northern Lights Manor, among other initiatives.
