The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce will be rewarding area residents for their Christmas spirit. The chamber and Manitoba Hydro are teaming up for the Light Up in the Spirit of Christmas contest, which awards prizes for outstanding holiday yard displays. "It gives the people who work really hard at decorating their homes for Christmas a little bit of recognition and a thank you for adding to the community spirit," said organizer Maureen Kozar. Winners will be chosen in three categories: Best Display, Most Lights and Best Ice Sculpture. The top decorators will each receive five boxes of multi-coloured holiday lights courtesy of Manitoba Hydro. The chamber has operated the contest each December since the 1980s, and Kozar said the displays keep getting better. "It seems like there's more and more participation every year," she said, adding that the number of ice sculptures in particular has increased in recent years. Kozar encourages anyone who sees an outstanding display in the Flin Flon-Creighton-Denare Beach area to nominate the residence by calling The Reminder at 687-3454, CFAR at 687-3469 or the chamber office at 687-4518. The deadline for nominations will be Dec. 17. Final judging will take place between then and Christmas Eve.
