The Liberals may seek a recount – or even another vote – after narrowly losing the northern Saskatchewan riding of Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River on election night.
Liberal Lawrence Joseph lost to the NDP’s Georgina Jolibois by just 70 votes out of more than 30,000 cast.
Speaking to The Reminder early Tuesday, Joseph said he received reports of ballot shortages in two communities, Big River and Ahtahkakoop, that hindered voter turnout.
He said that should not have happened and that his supporters “deserve clarity.”
Asked whether a whole new election in the riding would be required to address the problems he cited, Joseph agreed, saying, “At this point in time, that is probably the situation.”
Later Tuesday, in an interview with The StarPhoenix, Joseph said the Liberal Party and his campaign organizers were talking about requesting a judicial recount, but no decision had been made.
Jolibois said Tuesday morning she had neither talked to Joseph nor heard reports of the irregularities he spoke of.
The Reminder will have more on this story, as well as full coverage of the election, in our print edition Wednesday.
