Letter to the Editor: Call to attend NWMO meeting

Dear Editor, Re: Numerous letters written regarding the concept of a nuclear waste DGR (deep geological repository) outside of Creighton: The next Creighton Community Liaison (CLC) meeting is to be held tomorrow, January 22 at the Creighton Community

Dear Editor,

Re: Numerous letters written regarding the concept of a nuclear waste DGR (deep geological repository) outside of Creighton:

The next Creighton Community Liaison (CLC) meeting is to be held tomorrow, January 22 at the Creighton Community Hall at 6 pm. I have written a letter to the CLC asking once again for them to commit to bringing Dr. Gordon Edwards to our communities to share his extensive knowledge regarding a number of aspects related to nuclear power, especially the disposal of its waste materials.

Flin Flon, Creighton and surrounding areas have always had a reputation for showing support to those in need, particularly when illness and hardship comes upon individuals and their families.

Where are folks now when some life-changing decision may be made that will impact generations to come, possibly right across our country?

I realize the idea of sitting in a boring meeting, where terminology isn’t easily understood by most of us, isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time.

There won’t be any prizes, drinks or appetizers, and the start time of 6 pm might get in the way of dinner time, but this is worth coming out for anyway.

The process set up by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is very methodical and meant to give the illusion of educating communities as they seduce their citizens into feeling comfortable with risks that have not been taken anywhere else yet in the world.

Furthermore, they keep opening up their wallets to “help out the community” all while sharing their propaganda created to convince us all that we, and generations hereafter, will be better off with their dirty laundry being buried here.

So far the Aboriginal communities have taken the lead in showing their opposition to this proposal. For months many people have travelled for hours to attend these meetings.

I have heard similar objections from many other local citizens who also oppose this whole idea and don’t believe it will move forward, especially since First Nations peoples have opposed it.

NWMO is heavily invested in finding a solution for their waste problem.  If they don’t, there is always the possibility that the Government of Canada will finally wise up and shut them down until they do so.

We all need to keep in mind that it is NWMO’s job to sell us on this project.

So I ask anyone who is concerned about this matter to come out to the next CLC meeting and support me and others who are asking to hear more from another side.
