On February 1st, 2005, The Public Guardian and Trustee will have new powers to combat financial abuse with the proclamation of section 19 of The Public Trustee Amendment Act, 2001. "These new amendments will provide The Public Guardian and Trustee with the means required to protect vulnerable citizens in Saskatchewan from financial abuse," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. Where there are allegations of financial abuse or incapacity, the Public Guardian and Trustee will now be able to take the necessary measures to conduct abuse investigations. These measures may include obtaining personal information from financial institutions or freezing accounts in order to appropriately administer the financial affairs of vulnerable adults. "These proclamations will also be welcomed by members of the community who work with and advocate for vulnerable adults," Quennell said.
