Jonathon Naylor Editor A decade after losing its lone mine and primary employer, the northern Manitoba town of Leaf Rapids has at least some reason for optimism. Resource exploration company CanAlaska Uranium Ltd. has staked over 11,500 hectares of land near the now-defunct Ruttan mine. 'The Leaf Rapids volcano-sedimentary belt is under-explored, and has significant potential for new discoveries, especially given the size of the previous operating mine,' Dr. Karl Schimann, vice-president of exploration for CanAlaska, said in a news release. Schimann said that while early geophysical work in the area was often limited by technology, later exploration work 'is of high quality but had limited follow-up.' 'CanAlaska's reprocessing of the geophysical data using our in-house staff has given us flexibility to model multiple scenarios,' he said, 'and come up with some outstanding targets in this prolifically mineralized area.' See 'Copp...' on pg. 11 Continued from pg. 7 While CanAlaska is known for uranium exploration, the Leaf Rapids project appears focused on copper, gold and zinc. The Vancouver-based company plans to carry out the first reconnaissance of its new Leaf Rapids claims in August as part of a diversification of exploration interests.Ê The 82.8-million tonne Ruttan copper-zinc deposit was discovered in 1969. It was mined to supply concentrate to the Flin Flon smelter, with 55.7 million tonnes extracted between 1975 and Ruttan's closure in 2002. CanAlaska staff have compiled regional geophysical data, and identified prospective exploration targets within the immediate vicinity of the deposit.Ê These geophysical targets are supported by the information from the previous exploration programs carried out in the surrounding district, CanAlaska said. CanAlaska said historical drill information and historical assessment reports is available to confirm the favourable location of the targets staked by the company.Ê Additional confirmation of the target areas has been obtained, the company said. The work at Leaf Rapids will be in addition to CanAlaska's continued long-term development of its uranium exploration portfolio.Ê The TSX has not reviewed and does not accept responsibility for the adequacy or accuracy of information supplied by CanAlaska.
