A Flin Flon woman is suing Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre over an alleged botched surgery two years ago. The woman's statement of claim, filed last week at the Court of Queen's Bench and obtained yesterday by The Reminder, asserts that her double bypass cardiac surgery of 2002 was performed incorrectly. Following the surgery, the claim states, the plaintiff underwent an angiogram "which indicated that...one bypass had been done on the incorrect artery and the other had not been properly placed." Following the angiogram, the plaintiff was referred to an Ontario hospital, where a second surgery was performed "to correct the deficiencies" of the Winnipeg surgery, the statement reads. The statement alleges that the Health Sciences Centre failed "to have a system to ensure that such surgery was conducted with proper care and without negligence." It also accuses the hospital of "failing to be aware of the limitations of knowledge" of three doctors and two nurses named in the lawsuit. The plaintiff is seeking "special damages" to be determined at a trial, "general damages," "interest and costs" of her lawsuit, and "such further and other relief as this honourable court may allow." If the hospital wishes to defend against this proceeding, it has until April 1 to prepare a statement of defence.
