Flin Flon’s landfill will be reopening on an altered schedule this week.

The landfill, which has been closed during COVID-19 and shut down officially April 4, will reopen under a new temporary schedule April 29. The new hours will include regular hours for Wednesdays and Saturdays - 10 a.m.-5:45 p.m. - while being closed for the other five days each week.

Municipal garbage collection has continued as normal throughout the outbreak.

Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley said there is currently a plan to reopen the landfill at least partially, working with the Flin Flon Recycling Centre and the Flin Flon and District Environment Council to possibly reopen the service.

“We’re in the process of contacting the Recycling Centre to see a partial reopening,” Huntley said during the April 21 Flin Flon city council Zoom meeting.

Flin Flon is the only large community in northern Manitoba that has shut down their landfill during the COVID-19 outbreak - landfills in Thompson, The Pas and Snow Lake remain open to the public.

Since the closure, a small number of Flin Flon residents have reported coming to Creighton to dump garbage, doing so while paying a higher, non-resident rate, but if Flin Flonners have been coming to the Creighton landfill, community leaders there haven’t noticed.

Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler said there hasn’t been any increase in traffic to the Creighton landfill from Flin Flonners during the outbreak.

“There hasn’t been any extra traffic into the Creighton landfill from Flin Flon, but we’re keeping an eye on it,” said Fidler during an April 22 town council conference call meeting.

“We’re only seeing the regular Creighton residents. It’s been good so far.”
