Hapnot Collegiate athletes are back into the swing of fall sports. Here are a few highlights from the season:
Soccer
This weekend, Kings and Kweens soccer teams are off to the zones tournament in Thompson.
On the weekend of Sept. 11 and 12, both the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams played in Neepawa. Coach Dean Grove noted the Kweens lost to Altona in a shootout after overtime and lost to Neepawa 1-0 in the second game before defeating Swan River 4-1 in the third game. The Kings defeated Altona 2-1, lost to Neepawa 4-0, then defeated Swan River 4-1 in their last game.
Last weekend, the Soccer Kweens were in Swan River for a tournament. They lost their first game to Dauphin 2-1, defeated Thompson 1-0 and defeated Swan River 3-1 in their third game.
The boys also played three games, winning 3-0 against Dauphin in their first game, during which goalie Eric Rutherford was injured. Grade 9 player Mason Tower stepped in as goalie for the rest of the tournament. The team lost 0-2 against Thompson in the second, and in the third game beat Swan River 3-1.
“We were missing a few of our veterans, who were in The Pas playing senior volleyball,” noted soccer parent Karen Kittle.
“Our rookies really stepped up,” added coach Tyler Kittle.
At the Flin Flon school board meeting on Sept. 29, board chairman Murray Skeavington wished the two teams the best of luck this weekend.
“To the best of our knowledge, the Kweens are shooting for their 10th consecutive zone title in soccer,” noted Grove, “and the Kings are going for 6 or 7 in a row.”
Volleyball
Volleyball is also keeping students busy at Hapnot Collegiate: the senior varsity (SV) boys volleyball team won the Zone 11 Pre Zone Tournament in The Pas on Sept. 25 and 26, beating out MBCI (The Pas) in the finals by 2-0.
“The tournament was a good chance to see how we stack up in our zone,” said Tim Weibe, coach and physical education teacher at Hapnot. Things seem to be looking good: the coach reports that the boys didn’t lose one set all weekend.
Senior varsity (SV) girls placed second at prezones last weekend, losing to Thompson.
In a tournament in Swan River over the weekend, the junior varsity (JV) girls volleyball team came out swinging: they earned first place.
“We took Russell to a third set and finished with a win,” says coach Amy Olenick. “It was our first tournament of the season and was a great turnout.”
With three Hapnot teams in Swan River last weekend, there was plenty of school spirit to go around, noted parent Keely Patterson. “All the soccer teams came to cheer on the girls right to the very end. It was so nice to see the support from each team.”
Cross-country
Cross-country athletes have been working hard on the field this fall as well. Hapnot’s cross-country team will be hosting Zone 11 Cross Country Zones on Monday, Oct. 5 at the Flin Flon Ski Club.
