Creighton hosted its annual Border Bash basketball tournament last weekend.
The Sandy Bay T-Wolves walked away with the tournament crown, beating The Pas’ Margaret Barbour Collegiate (MBCI) Spartans 77-65.
The host Kodiaks finished fourth, losing the third-place game 51-28 to the HBOIERC Huskies from Norway House.
Creighton won their first game against the La Ronge Churchill Chargers 57-46, but lost to MBCI in the tournament semi-finals.
Hapnot Collegiate lost their opening game against Norway House 53-41, then scooped up a big 68-32 win over Nipawin’s L.P. Miller Bears. In the tournament’s B-side final, the Kings earned fifth-place overall with a 71-39 win against La Ronge.
Volleyball zones
Hapnot’s volleyball season finished up in Warren at this year’s senior provincials.
The senior Kweens team qualified for the tournament with a win on their home court at last month’s Zone 11 championship.
Hapnot won two sets on the weekend but did not win a game, ending with losses to the Green Valley Pirates, MacGregor Mustangs, Goose Lake High Angels and Minnedosa Chancellors.
Bantam AA
It was another banner weekend for the Flin Flon Bantam AA Bombers, winning the Don MacLean bantam tournament in Thompson.
The bantam squad went undefeated through the weekend, winning against Thompson, Norway House and Cross Lake in the round robin. After earning a spot in the tournament final, the bantam Bombers topped the Thompson King Miners 7-4 and earned the Dylan Cripps Memorial Cup.
Morgan Daneliuk and Blake Alexander each finished with four points in the final game. Alexander led the team in scoring during the weekend, earning 14 points in just four games.
This year’s bantam Bomber squad is aiming for their second straight provincial championship. The team will be back in action at a tournament this weekend in Rosenort.
Last weekend’s tournament was a special one for some members of the team. Cripps, the tournament trophy’s namesake, was a Thompson hockey player who passed away in a canoe accident in May. Some players on the bantam Bombers had either played with or against Cripps in
the past.
