A manhunt ended this morning when RCMP located Jonas Budd at a residence in Sturgeon Landing.

The RCMP said officers on scene have established a perimeter and are communicating with Budd to ensure the safety of him, the community and all responders.

“Members of the public in the area of Sturgeon Landing, Saskatchewan can expect to see a larger than normal police presence in the community,” the police said in a news release issued at 11:41 am. “The public is asked to respect all police barricades and direction given by police officers on the scene. If the situation changes and residents are required to take further actions, we will immediately take steps to notify the impacted residents.”

Several units from the RCMP in Manitoba and Saskatchewan are on the scene.

Budd, 43, is accused of abducting Kayla Natomagan, 17, from a home in Lac La Ronge First Nation shortly after 3 am Wednesday morning.

He is also accused of shooting to death a 17-year-old male who was inside the home. Media reports have identified the victim as Natomagan’s boyfriend.

Shortly before noon on Wednesday, after an amber alert was issued, RCMP advised that Mounties from Cranberry Portage had located Natomagan “safe and sound.”

That’s when the RCMP announced they believed Budd, still considered armed and dangerous, had fled on foot into the bush “in the area of Cranberry Portage.” Police could not be more specific about the location.
