Canada’s English-language TV stations will have to broadcast at least seven hours of local news per week under a new regulatory decision.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecom-munications Commission (CRTC) made the announcement Wednesday.
The policy means English-language stations must air at least seven hours of “locally relevant programming” each week in non-metropolitan markets, and 14 hours a week in metropolitan markets, the Canadian Press reported.
The CRTC also announced changes designed to help smaller stations struggling to generate revenue meet the requirement, the news agency reported.
