Creighton RCMP are asking the public to keep close tabs on their cabins this winter, hoping to avoid the break-ins and thefts that have occurred at seasonal homes in recent years. Police ask that cabins be checked on a regular basis so they have the best chance of solving any crimes that take place. "If an offence is reported several months after being committed, evidence like footprints, vehicle or snowmobile tracks in fresh snow will disappear," the police said in a press statement. "Also, if someone checks on the property every Monday, and the next Monday an offence has occurred, police have a timeline to work with." With Amisk Lake frozen over, police said, seasonal properties are "conveniently accessible for people on snowmobiles looking for things like electronics, money and liquor." Police remind people to remove all valuables from cabins during the winter months, lock all doors to cabins and sheds and board up all windows. If it is not possible to monitor a cabin, police advise that people have a friend, relative or summer neighbour keep an eye on the property. "With your cooperation, police hope to minimize the amount of break and enters, and allow you to start your 2005 summer off properly," said the RCMP. Anyone with information on a crime may phone the Creighton detachment at 688-8888 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).11/29/2004
