The 28th annual Northern Juried Art Show being held at Keewatin Community College in The Pas is the place to be May 14 - 16, 2004. And do we have a show for you! Northern artists each year prepare their art in anticipation of the coming spring knowing that the NJAS arrives in a different community each year. This year The Pas has the honour to host the show. A wide variety of art from the far corners of the North await the three jurors as they judge works ranging from photography and fibre art to crafts and sculpture. Let's not forget the many types of paintings or the drawing and print making that always are a treat to see. Whether new inspirations have enlightened brushes for the first time or experienced fingers have finely tuned a sculpture creation, the NJAS will be the place to view it. It is important to include our youth to ensure art is promoted for future generations. Because of this, we have introduced a Youth Category to showcase their talents. As was mentioned, this is a "juried" art show, and we are pleased to invite three jurors for this year's competition who bring not only northern roots but talent and experience. Pauline Braun is a recognized northerner who called Thompson home for many years. Pauline has numerous NJAS awards and is well known for her coloured pencil techniques and water colours. Art shows and exhibitions keep her busy in Winnipeg where she has just recently moved to. Jan Hall is another familiar name in the northern art world as she hails from Thompson and has been a frequent contributor and winner in the NJAS. Her quilt making/fibre art discipline is recognized throughout Manitoba and is well received at various exhibits and shows she attends throughout the year. Doug Glenn was raised in The Pas and will return to be a juror this year. Since graduating from the University of Manitoba with honours, Doug has been heavily involved with the Arts and Music scene in Winnipeg. His art is on display throughout Canada. The NJAS will be open at the Keewatin Community College Friday, May 14 from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Drop by to see all the entries which will be highlighted by this year's winners in each category. There is also a "People's Choice" category so don't forget to vote for your favourite entry. Winning pieces from the NJAS will represent the north at the Rural and Northern Art Show held at the Legislature in Winnipeg this summer. In addition, two other events will also be featured in The Pas during the NJAS. Be sure to stop by the Sam Waller Museum for an exclusive glimpse of the "Polynesian Rain Forest" through the eyes of our children. Kelsey School Division's student art show runs from May 10 - 24, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. daily, sponsored by the Moffat Foundation through the Northern Juried Art Show. Also, Pauline Braun will be hosting a Water Colour Workshop. Learn Pauline's favourite water colour techniques while she's in town for the NJAS. Phone the Arts Council to reserve your spot. See you at the NJAS this weekend.
