Flin Flon's Grade 7 and Grade 8 bands played in front of a crowd of approximately 300 at their Winter Concert in the McIsaac gymnasium on Wednesday night. Director Kyle Whitehead says that the Grade 7 students had been preparing for the concert for a month and a half, while the Grade 8 students have been working on their pieces since mid-September. "The students were excellent," said Whitehead. "It was one of the best Christmas concerts we've had." This is Whitehead's fourth year as the junior high band director. The bands are made up of students from all three schools, 62 members in the Grade 7 band and 45 in the Grade 8 band. As regular band classes are held separately at all three schools, evening rehearsals were held closer to concert dates in order to allow the group to play together. The one exception to that rule is that the Grade 8 students from Ruth Betts bus to Parkdale School twice a school cycle for classes. After Christmas, the Grade 7 band will begin preparing for their trip to Saskatoon to participate in the Beginning Band Festival, while the Grade 8 band will be going to Edmonton with the high school students to participate in a festival there. Just a reminder that the K-6 Christmas Concerts will be held at the Flin Flon Community Hall next week. McIsaac will be on Monday, December 15, Parkdale on Tuesday, December 16 and Ruth Betts on Wednesday, December 17. All concerts will begin at 7 p.m.
