Eight incidents kept Flin Flon firefighters busy in June, city council heard last week. Council reviewed the monthly fire chief's report, which detailed each incident: June 1, 2:06 PM: A caller stated there was a bush fire at the end of Hapnot Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found a large bush fire that was very close to a residence. The fire was quickly contained using both pumpers and a floto pump. The RCMP was called to investigate as this was a suspicious fire. The fire chief and 12 firefighters responded. June 1, 6:33 PM: A caller stated there was a grass fire on the rocks by Ruth Betts Community School. Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire off Hiawatha Avenue that was quickly extinguished. The probable cause was arson. The fire chief and 13 firefighters responded. June 6, 3:36 PM: A caller stated there was a bush fire west of the ski chalet. Upon arrival, the fire chief called in Saskatchewan Resources as it was determined the fire was on the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border in the deep bush. The fire chief and 14 firefighters responded. June 8, 7:30 AM: A caller stated the alarms were ringing inside the Northern Lights Manor, but the alarm was false. The fire chief was able to call 911 and stop the firefighters from responding. Upon arrival, the fire chief determined that a nursed had called 911 to get the fire department to reset the alarm system. The nurse was informed that the fire department does not reset alarm systems, as that is done by the building's maintenance staff and that they could be billed for the call. The fire chief responded alone. June 10, 9:15 AM: The fire chief received a call requesting assistance at the scene of a death on East Street. The fire chief and one firefighter responded. June 18, 11:30 AM: A caller stated the alarms were ringing inside a residence on North Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters determined the cause of the alarm was smoke coming from a skill saw, as a handyman was installing a new front door. The fire chief and six firefighters responded. June 22, 11:40 AM: A caller stated that smoke could be seen coming from the dump area. Upon arrival, firefighters determined the cause of the smoke was from normal pavement production operations. The on-call officer and five firefighters responded. June 24, 4:23 AM: A caller stated that a residential suite at the Aspen Grove apartments required assistance. A tenant had called because her basement was full of water and she had been unable to reach Manitoba Housing to pump it out. The fire department deemed this a false alarm. The on-call officer and 15 firefighters responded.
