Joke political party wants capital in northern Manitoba

If a major political party vowed to move Canada’s capital from Ottawa to northern Manitoba, its leader’s sanity would be questioned.

If a major political party vowed to move Canada’s capital from Ottawa to northern Manitoba, its leader’s sanity would be questioned.

But when the Rhinoceros Party of Canada made that pledge this week, the response was just as intended: laughter and eyeball rolling.

Sebastian Corriveau, leader of the satirical party, unveiled that pledge, and other ridiculous promises, while appearing on Winnipeg radio station CJOB.

According to CJOB’s website, he also promised that Senators would earn $138,000 a year while working a minimum of four days a year.

And how would Senators be appointed?

“You buy a lottery ticket. You scratch and you could win a Senate seat,” he told the radio station. “So that’s a really good wage, that’s very few [little] work, and you can vote for or against every law in Canada.”

The Montreal-based Rhinoceros Party aims to bring humour to the campaign trail. The party ran 14 MP candidates in the 2011 election, with the most successful candidate earning 417 votes.
