The Manitoba Youth Job Centre has had a very busy and successful summer serving Flin Flon and surrounding communities of Creighton, Cranberry Portage, and Denare Beach since it opened its doors on May 13. This has been the second summer since the MYJC began operating in Flin Flon and once again several community members within the area have come by the office to use the services we offer. Whether it is finding a job, resume development assistance, or joining the Odd Job Squad, students and employers/homeowners have come to the MYJC for assistance or to see what we have to offer. We have had numerous job orders placed by not only employers, but private homeowners as well. The MYJC was able to fill numerous positions ranging from full- and part-time positions to casual jobs. Many students and youth signed up with the Flin Flon MYJC this summer! In all we had 30 student registrations and 35 job orders. Some of the jobs advertised through the MYJC included yard work labourers, camp personnel and warehouse assistants. The MYJC Odd Job Squad (OJS) had a very busy summer this year. The OJS is a casual work program where students/youth can gain some work experience, learn valuable skills that will no doubt benefit them in future employment efforts, and earn an income throughout the summer. Some of the events that the OJS put on this summer were Flower Frenzy on July 3, a window wash on July 19, a carwash on August 1 and a hot dog sale on August 2. The majority of the events this summer were a big hit within the community, including the hot dog sale, which was our most successful event of the summer. As summer begins to slowly wind down, so does the program at the Flin Flon Manitoba Youth Job Centre (MYJC). As the office manager, I'd like to commend the numerous employers, both businesses and homeowners, who have placed job orders with the centre this summer. Your participation in the job referral service provides youth and students in our community with the opportunity to gain work experience and an income! Volunteers and businesses helped out at our events as well, and community members attended our events. The MYJC program depends on the partnership with community members, and our success is due largely to them. To the students and youth who registered with the centre, we hope that your job search continues to be successful. MYJC offices close for the season on Friday, Aug. 16. We will reopen in May of 2014, so be sure to look for us in the spring! If you have any last-minute questions about the MYJC and its services, please don't hesitate to call me at 204-687-1689. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Amy Bradt is the office manager of the Manitoba Youth Job Centre.
