Jonathon Naylor Editor Flin Flon was sounding like New Orleans as the NorMan Jazz Festival celebrated the rhythmic style of music. Held at Hapnot Collegiate Oct. 27 and 28, the festival brought together northern Manitoba band students and professional clinicians. 'It is always very exciting to see the students working side by side with the best jazz musicians in Manitoba,' said Anna Jardine, music teacher at Ecole McIsaac and Ruth Betts Community schools. 'They watch and learn from the best, which is very much a part of the tradition of jazz.' Some of Jardine's students participated along with students from Hapnot as well as schools in The Pas and Thompson. All told, about 100 students took part. During the two-day festival, students took in full band rehearsals, sectionals and improvisation clinics. Each group received a one-hour session with each full band clinician and sectional leader. The festival ended with a punctuation mark of a concert that had the audience of about 150 people savouring every sound. 'The event was a complete success and all students and directors left feeling inspired and excited by their work at the festival,' said Jardine.
