2003 January 6 Ð A bustling New Year's Eve capped off another busy month for Operation Red Nose. The volunteer service provided 191 rides throughout December, including 49 on the final day of the year. January 7 Ð The New Year's Baby for 2003 was born Sunday, January 5 at the Flin Flon General Hospital. Proud parents Simon Linklater and Cheryl Michel were blessed with a daughter, Clara Marie Michel, who was born at 10:37 p.m. and weighed 8 bls, 3 and 1/2 ounzes. January 10 Ð Local residents salvaged more recyclables from the landfill than ever before in 2002. It was a record-breaking year at the Flin Flon REcycling Centre, with 298 tonnes of materials processed. January 13 Ð The City of Flin Flon is expected to begin paying for water and sewage pump-outs in Channing and Wally Heights sometime in May. Last September, City Council voted to pay for the pump-outs in the subdivisions, which are hooked up to water and sewer lines, for one year. Ð The number of fire calls in Flin Flon last year was down from the number in 2001. The Fire Chief's Report notes there were a total of 76 calls to the Flin Flon Fire Department in 2002, down from he record year of 2001, where there were 102 calls. Ð Local residents again showed their true colours this past holiday season, plugging $1,328 into the uptown parking meters for a good cause. From December 9-24 the City offered free parking and agreed to donate any coins collected to the Lord's Bounty Food Bank. January 15 Ð Monday night at the regular meeting of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, branch 73, there was a special presentation made to Eva Krassilowsky. Eva received the Palm Leaf to the Meritorious Service Award (MSA) for her years of service to the auxiliary. She was initiated into the auxiliary in 1958. January 17 Ð Uptown shoppers won't have to worry about plugging parking meters for a least the next six months, if ever again. Mayor Dennis Ballard announced yesterday that Flin Flon City Council has voted unanimously to put a six-month moratorium on all meters effective immediately. January 27 Ð The numbing winter temperatures over the weekend couldn't keep residents and mushers from enjoying the 15th Annual Sled Dog Races and Winter Events Festival. A few dozen well-bundled-up spectators were out on the frozen, snowy surface of Ross Lake Saturday and yesterday to enjoy the annual winter tradition. January 28 Ð It was a busy first year for the Flin Flon, Creighton and area Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). At their first annual general meeting, president Debbie Hiebert reported that to date the local SPCA has found homes for a total of 66 homeless animals Ð 33 dogs and 30 cats. January 30 Ð Recycling in Flin Flon will take a big step next week when the first phase of the Recycling Centre's curbside pick-up program begins.
