Creighton School Board Chairman Terry Brown said yesterday he's heard much more positive input than negative since Tuesday's landmark decision to establish a high school in Creighton. "I would expect that there will still be some more negative reaction, but it's time to move on," he said. "We're elected school board trustees and we've made our decision." Despite some strong opposition voiced at last week's public forums on the high school issue, Brown said he's confident the decision is favoured by the majority of the electorate. Roughly 200 of the approximately 1,350 voters within the Creighton School Division attended the public forums. "This was the right decision at the right time," said Brown. Trustee Heather Jacobson agreed. "The ones who really voiced their opinions quite loudly were the ones who didn't want (the high school), and they were quite strong," she said. "But we got just as many letters, phone calls and people approaching us on the street who really wanted it but were too shy to stand up and say so, and a lot of those were parents." Jacobson said she doesn't believe it makes sense to send students and tuition fees to Flin Flon when Creighton Community School faced a potential closure. "It was a hard choice," she said. "We have to do what's best for our school and our kids. I think we made the right decision." Brown expects construction of a second storey atop the home economics area at Creighton Community School to proceed this fall. The addition is to feature two classrooms, a science lab and storage space to help accommodate the high school students. Two or three new teachers, one of whom will also serve as a career counselor, will be hired for next school year, said the chairman. Grades 10, 11 and 12 will be added to Creighton Community School, one year at a time, beginning in September of 2004. The board's 4-2 vote in favour of the high school came after a feasibility study concluded that adding the grades could be done.
