Wearing T-shirts and smiles, hundreds of residents gathered at Bakers Narrows yesterday to enjoy one that enduring family tradition known as Bakers Narrows Day. The 54th Annual Bakers Narrows Day went off without a hitch, providing an afternoon of enjoyment for people of all ages. "It was good family fun," said Colleen McKee, who was amoung the residents to enjoy the festivities. "I thought it was awesome. We had a really good time." See 'No' P.# Con't from P.# There simply wasn't time to be bored during the afternoon, with everything from face painting to horseshoe competitions to keep the people entertained. The fun got underway at 10 a.m. with a complimentary pancake breakfast served up by the Flin Flon Lions Club, whose members spent hours organizing this year's installment of Bakers Narrows Day. Entertainment included lively performances from the Nemihitowok Hoop Troop and the Flin Flon Marching Band, as well as an introduction to this year's Queen Mermaid contestants. There was also arm wrestling, a tug-of-war and, one of McKee's favourites, the Canoe Challenge on nearby Lake Athapap. "I thought the canoe race was a really good idea," she smiled, adding that she hopes to see the event return next year. The Canoe Challenge, organized by students from Many Faces Education Centre, represented fun with a purpose. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of a new Lions Handivan to transport seniors around the community. A few elected officials made a point of showing up to greet the crowd, including Flin Flon MLA Gerard Jennissen and Mayor Dennis Ballard. This was the third year the Lions have organized Bakers Narrows Day, having taken over the event from the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce in 2002. The Reminder will publish the names of the winners of the Bakers Narrows Day draw tomorrow.
