Police have been called to an uptick in property crimes around Flin Flon in the past couple of weeks, RCMP have confirmed.

Multiple break-and-enters and vehicle thefts have been reported to police in recent days in and around town, with some including destruction of said property. Some of the incidents may be connected to each other. Reports of incidents of violence tied to the property crime have not been confirmed by police, but investigations still are ongoing into who is doing the theft, where, when and why.

As investigations remain active as of press time, Flin Flon RCMP have not confirmed any specific details of the incidents or whether or not arrests have been made - only that incidents have happened and investigations are continuing. No suspects have yet been named.

Manitoba RCMP Cpl. Julie Courchene, one of the police force’s media liaisons, said that while police continue investigating, residents can take small steps to make them less likely to be targets of property crime.

“We’re seeing property crime issues all over Manitoba. It’s not a secret,” said Courchene.

“We’re urging people to get back to the basics - making sure you’re locking your vehicle, securing your home and your outbuildings, your sheds, closing windows, locking doors… if you have lighting, turning that on. All these kind of little things can deter people from committing these offences.”

Courchene also said that people who see possible suspicious activity should report it to police, saying that information can be used to help track down possible suspects or build a better picture of events that have happened.

“If you see something suspicious, if there’s something out of place, the people who live in our communities, they know when something’s a bit off. Take that time to call us,” said Courchene.

“We do have analysts going through our files and calls and where they’re happening, just different tidbits of information, putting those things together. They’ll work on prolific offenders, who’s in the area, whether they’ve been arrested for these crimes in the past, looking into all of that. The more information we have, then we can complete search warrants and so on and so forth. It’s that kind of stuff and urging people to call us.”
