An electrical issue was likely at the root of a blaze that tore through a beloved downtown eatery last week.

Flin Flon Fire Chief Jim Petrie asked the Office of the Fire Commissioner to investigate after a fire destroyed the upper floor of Crepes N Grapes.

“The probable cause was electrical in nature,” said Petrie, reading the report he received from the commissioner.

Petrie had suspected an electrical origin but felt it was best for the Office of the Fire Commissioner to make the official call.

Petrie is accredited to investigate fires but given that he is the fire chief, he “can’t wear two hats.”

Required

Investigations are required in situations in which Flin Flon suffers a loss – like the Crepes N Grapes building – or if an injury or death occurs.

No injuries were reported from the fire, which occurred last Wednesday and required Flin Flon and Hudbay firefighters working in tandem to contain.

After firefighters left the scene, fire tape blocked off the building with guards ensuring no one entered the building.

The tape and guards have both since been removed, indicating it is safe to pass by the building, though Petrie says no one should be inside the structure.

The building is currently boarded up with the water shut off.

“Now it’s in the hands of the RCMP and the insurance company,” said Petrie. “But the RCMP is out now, too, because it was determined to be electrical.”

Located at 44 Main Street, Crepes N Grapes opened in January 2007. Years earlier the building housed the original Mugsy’s Deli.
