With a focus on women in politics, Churchill MP Niki Ashton will be guest speaker at the International Women’s Day (IWD) luncheon tomorrow.
Ashton will address the crowd, expected to consist mainly of women, at the Flin Flon Community Hall.
Organizer Colleen Arnold says she hopes women and girls from the community will be inspired by the luncheon as well as Ashton’s remarks.
“IWD provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women and to acknowledge the work of women, past and present,” said Arnold. “Others are then inspired to work towards change and continue in our efforts to gain true equality.
“We want to inspire more women and girls in the community to take on leadership roles,” said Arnold, who has been a part of celebrating IWD in the area for 12 years.
“Ms. Ashton will give us insight on how to take those steps and the importance of having more women in leadership roles such as politics.”
This year’s theme of Influential Women: Agents of Change is seen as appropriate given Ashton’s political career.
“Niki Ashton has been a strong voice for women and for the North, so we thought she would be a great fit,” said Arnold. “We were very excited that she could take time away from her busy schedule to speak.”
Tickets for the IWD luncheon are available at the Women’s Resource Center, Orange Toad and Northern Rainbow’s End until 5 pm today. The luncheon will be held at the Flin Flon Community Hall tomorrow from 12 noon to 1 pm.
