Jonathon Naylor Editor Flin Flon will ring in a new era of post-secondary education this fall. Construction is nearing the final phase at UCN's Northern Manitoba Mining Academy and Regional Centre. "There has been plenty of interest in the upcoming programming," UCN said in a statement to The Reminder. It is not clear how many students will attend the facilities, being built on Hart Avenue near the HBMS Main Gate, as courses are still being developed. The Mining Academy may offer instruction in mineral processing, exploration, working directly with mineral samples, and geological surveying. Simulator Other training will revolve around a high-tech mining simulator that includes four interchangeable consoles. The Mining Academy plans to work with northern communities, including First Nations and Mtis communities, to encourage engagement in the training being offered. Meanwhile, courses at the Regional Centre will include non-violent crisis intervention, small-motor repair, administrative assistant and educational assistant training, and SAT prep. New to the centre, presently located at Many Faces Education Centre, will be exploration camp training. Computer education courses are also being explored in cooperation with Snow Lake. UCN said one advantage of the new facilities is that courses with lab components can be offered. The latest budgetary figure The Reminder obtained for the facilities was $3.15 million, an amount that is being roughly split between the federal and provincial governments. A more up-to-date figure, if there is one, was unavailable at press time.
