Inco Ltd. is spending $3.4 million to upgrade its smelter to meet new federal emissions standards set to take effect in 2008, CBC reported yesterday. Cathy Stewart, the nickel mine's environment and health superintendent, told CBC that the initiative could cut down levels of particulate and heavy metals by as much as 80 per cent. Stewart said the complex upgrade will involve improving the way gas flows through the smelter's precipitator. See 'World' P.# Con't from P.# Inco's Thompson operation produces about 100 million lbs. of nickel annually for world markets. In addition to nickel, the Thompson operation produces a copper/nickel matte product that is sent to Inco's facilities in Sudbury, Ontario for further processing. Another byproduct, cobalt oxide, is also shipped to other Inco locations for processing.
