In brief: Rob Clarke requires apology from Sen. Lillian Dyck

Rob Clarke has called on Liberal Senator Lillian Dyck to apologize after reportedly saying the northern Saskatchewan MP is acting like a “white man.”

According to the Ottawa Citizen, Dyck, who like Clarke is Cree, doesn’t consider her comment to be offensive.

While in the Senate on Dec. 9, Dyck said she felt that Clarke had not shown sufficient respect while testifying about his bill to change how First Nations are governed, reports the Citizen.

According to the newspaper, Dyck said Clarke displayed “boastful” behaviour when asked if he was concerned that his bill was coming to the Senate before another controversial bill, which relates to First Nations education.

“That, for a First Nations man, is not traditional First Nations behaviour,” said Dyck, according to the Citizen. “It was not at all. It is what we would call … white man behaviour, and you can be insulted by that if you like.”

Clarke has been the Conservative MP of Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, which includes Creighton and Denare Beach, since 2008.
