In brief: Hudbay resolves occupation of Constancia mine, Peru

Constancia troubles

Hudbay says it has resolved an illegal occupation of its Constancia mine site in Peru.

The website Straight.com reports that activists “shut down” construction at Constancia during a protest last month, but Hudbay spokesperson Scott Brubacher says that’s not true.

“Last month part of the Constancia property was occupied illegally by a fluctuating number of people,” Brubacher told The Reminder. “Some activities in the pit stopped temporarily but commissioning activities at the plant continued. Reports that the events ‘shut down’ construction are incorrect.

“Because Hudbay Peru values its relationship with the community, it sent senior company officials to the area to participate in a multi-party effort to end the trespassing safely and lawfully. It welcomed mediation by national government.

“We understand the occupation of the property did not reflect the wishes of the majority of community members and was manipulated by outside interests.  We are glad to confirm the situation was resolved last month and talks are now underway between Hudbay Peru and representatives of the community of Uchucarco.

“The Uchucarco community signed an agreement in 2012 under which they leased the property to Hudbay Peru in exchange for significant commitments, with which the company is in compliance. In the past two years, for example, the company has invested under community agreements more than ($23.1 million). Some community development efforts are in place or development beyond these agreements.”
