A public inquest has been scheduled into the death of a Pelican Narrows murder suspect who died in prison in 2013.

John Bob Glen Custer, 19, was found deceased inside his cell at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre on November 24, 2013.

Custer was being held on remand. He was charged with second-degree murder in the strangling death of his aunt, Heather Ballantyne, 40, in Pelican Narrows.

Ballantyne’s body was discovered on Oct. 29, 2013. Custer, the lone suspect, was arrested three days later.

Foul play has not been mentioned as a factor in Custer’s death.

The inquest into Custer’s death is scheduled for this Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 20 at the Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench.

Legislation requires that the chief coroner hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.

The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died, and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s
jury can also make recommendations to prevent further deaths.
