The Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce raised an estimated $5,000-plus during its radio auction.

Broadcast live on CFAR this past Saturday, May 30, the auction sold 115 items to the highest bidders.

Chamber members provided all items for the auction, fueling one of the business-advocacy organization’s major fundraisers for the year.

Items up for bid included a season pass from the Flin Flon Arts Council, a one-year online subscription to The Reminder and a facility pass from the City of Flin Flon.

City hall council chambers served as headquarters for the auction, with the chamber’s Dave Kendall and CFAR’s Rob Hart handling the on-air duties.

Nearby, the chamber’s Rob Mathews kept track of the latest bids on a white board. In the end, all items were sold.

Gilmore on board

A familiar face in northern Manitoba geology has joined a Flin Flon-based mineral exploration company.

Copper Reef Mining Corp. has announced the appointment of Kelly Gilmore to its board of directors.

Gilmore, former chief exploration geologist for Hudbay, has over 30 years of experience in designing and executing exploration programs.

He is associated with a number of mine discoveries in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake region, including the 777 and Lalor mines.

Gilmore was twice part of teams that received the Bill Dennis Prospector of the Year Award from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.

“Kelly’s depth of knowledge in various areas of exploration and proven skills at finding major deposits will be a valuable asset to Copper Reef exploring its extensive quality land position in Flin Flon Belt, from Snow Lake, Manitoba, to Hanson Lake, Saskatchewan,” Copper Reef said in a news release.

Copper Reef said Gilmore’s arrival comes as the company refocuses its base-metal exploration efforts in the Flin Flon Belt.

Event cancelled

The Rotary Club of Flin Flon cancelled its Lobster Night fundraiser, originally scheduled for May, due to low ticket sales.

Lobster Night is traditionally one of the club’s most successful fundraisers of the year, not to mention a major social occasion.

There was speculation that the partial strike at Hudbay, and at the time the potential of a strike by the company’s largest union, USW Local 7106, played a role in the disappointing sales.

Rescheduled

Creighton Community School’s annual Track and Field Day has been rescheduled to Friday, June 5. The event was originally scheduled for last Friday, May 29, 2015.

The Track and Field Day is for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 with events like long jump, discus, ball throw and ball kicks along with races of various distances.
