Accident claims officer
A female corrections officer has died after being ejected from a prisoner transport vehicle south of The Pas.
The Pas RCMP responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 10, 45 km south of the community, last Thursday, Nov. 6.
Police said a Manitoba Corrections van transporting six prisoners from The Pas to Dauphin was travelling southbound when the driver, a corrections officer, lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle entered the east ditch, rolled and came to rest inside the tree line. One of the passengers, a 44-year-old female corrections officer from The Pas, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 43-year-old male driver, from The Pas, was transported to hospital in stable condition. The six male prisoners suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital as a precautionary
measure.
Road conditions were considered a factor in the accident. Police did not immediately know whether the woman who died was wearing a
seatbelt.
Helping families
Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice, with support from the Law Foundation of Saskatchewan, has developed a three-year pilot program designed to assist families through separation and divorce.
Family Matters: Assisting Families through Separation and Divorce is meant to help minimize the effect of separation and divorce on all family members, especially children.
The program offers families in transition access to an early, affordable and informal opportunity to resolve issues. Information, support and guidance will assist clients in addressing issues such as child custody, parenting plans, children’s developmental needs and property
division.
The program, already accessible in Saskatoon and Prince Albert, will be available Saskatchewan-wide in April 2016.
