Improved academics just one goal for Flin Flon's Ruth Betts educators

Improved academic results, more positive student connections and a greater emphasis on environmental sustainability are among this year’s goals at Ruth Betts Community School.

Improved academic results, more positive student connections and a greater emphasis on environmental sustainability are among this year’s goals at Ruth Betts Community School.

At its meeting last week, the Flin Flon school board learned of Ruth Betts’ three key objectives for 2014-15:

Literacy and numeracy

Ruth Betts staff want 95 per cent of students at or above grade level in literacy and numeracy as measured by teacher, provincial and CAT-IV assessments.

For students who are below grade level, the goal is to achieve one year’s growth.

A range of strategies will be used to meet that goal, such as reading and spelling programs, and educating parents on literacy and numeracy strategies they can use to help their child.

Connections

Ruth Betts is aiming to have 95 per cent of students be “positively connected” to their school, classroom and learning.

To that end the school will survey students in grades 3 to 8 to identify specific interests and then offer more extracurricular programming according to those interests.

Students will be paired up with members of the Flin Flon Bombers – known as Bomber Buddies in the schools – and offered a variety of multicultural activities.

Staff are also encouraged to be visible in activities outside of the school and to create a safe, caring and welcoming environment for all students, among other initiatives.

Sustainable development

Ruth Betts is aiming to foster responsible global citizens who contribute to the social, cultural, environmental and economic wellbeing of society, ensuring a sustainable future for all.

As such, the school will establish a school green team with students, teachers and staff, and continue to promote the concept of the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.

Students will continue to assist with the Flin Flon-Creighton Greening Project, and staff will ensure computers are shut down nightly, among other earth-friendly measures.
