When Flin Flon resident Doug Slater watched a Manitoba Conservation crew tackle a bush fire last weekend, he was very impressed with their efforts. As a pair of water bombers dropped their loads on the flames about 1.5 kilometres east of the city, Slater couldn't believe how swiftly they worked. "I timed them for 20 minutes, and every three minutes, they dropped a load," he said, adding that the crews deserve a pat on the back. Flames and smoke from the wildfire were visible in the distance behind Yamaha Power Centre along Highway 10. Mike Armstrong, a Natural Resource Officer who helped investigate the blaze, said "there was significant potential for the fire to spread." An illegal campfire was believed to have been at the root of the blaze.3/6/04
