Bruce Fidler is inclined to seek a fifth term as Creighton mayor, but he’s at least a month away from announcing a firm decision.
“I’m still thinking about it,” he said Monday when asked whether he will run for re-election this October. “I haven’t made up my mind yet. If it was tomorrow, I’d say yes, but it’s a few months away. I’m leaning towards [running], but I don’t know for sure.”
Fidler said a lot can happen between now and election day. He said he would likely have his mind made up toward the end of July.
He has been a fixture in Creighton politics for more than two decades, having joined town council as an alderman in 1994. He was acclaimed as mayor in 2003 and has held the position ever since, never once facing a challenger.
Fidler said his current term, which began in 2012, has been very successful.
“We’ve accomplished a lot of work without increasing taxes, basically,” he said. “We’ve had small increases, but we’ve been able to keep it very steady for a number of years.”
Fidler said there is still work to do, as the town would like to welcome more businesses and spur further economic development.
On that front, he has initiated economic-development discussions with his counterparts in Flin Flon and Denare Beach, Cal Huntley and Carl Lentowicz.
Fidler said the talks are still in their infancy but that it’s obvious any development in the area would benefit all three communities.
Creighton will hold its next civic election in October. As of Monday, no date had been set.
The current town council consists of Mayor Fidler, alderwomen Shirley Owen and Lorene Bonnett, and aldermen Don Aasen, Neal Andrusiak, Darren Grant and Jeff Lane.
