IAM members and supporters took part in a solidarity march down Main Street on Sunday afternoon after the union announced it would not delay vehicles entering Hudbay properties this week.

Striking IAM Local 1848 members will allow unrestricted access to vehicles entering Hudbay properties this week, the union’s president announced Sunday.

Rene Beauchamp made the announcement during a community barbecue hosted by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 1614 near the Hudbay main gate picket line.

Beauchamp told several dozen attendees that IAM members remain committed to securing a fair agreement with Hudbay.

“With that in mind I’m pleased to announce that IAM will be opening the picket lines this coming week to allow unrestricted access to Hudbay properties,” he said. “We hope that this will encourage Hudbay to come back to the table for honest and sincere discussions that can lead to a fair collective bargaining agreement.”

Beauchamp and wife Shelley then led a solidarity march around Main Street.

IAM delayed vehicles entering Hudbay last Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, skipping Thursday because of slippery road conditions. This caused lineups of vehicles far down the Perimeter Highway.

The Reminder will have more on the strike in our Wednesday print edition. Monday’s edition includes more on Hudbay’s financial position and future plans, among other articles.
