IAM rejects offer; strike continues

IAM Local 1848 members rejected Hudbay’s latest offer Monday, prolonging their strike in hopes of a more generous deal from the company.

IAM Local 1848 members rejected Hudbay’s latest offer Monday, prolonging their strike in hopes of a more generous deal from the company.

By a margin of 77 per cent, the union’s members turned down an offer described as similar to the one given to the company’s largest union, USW Local 7106.

“After almost 9 weeks on the strike line our members have spoken,” IAM said on its website.

The results, released at about 6:15 pm, came after the IAM bargaining team recommended membership decline the deal.

It also followed a dispute over whether IAM’s bargaining team had agreed to recommend the offer.

In an email to employees last week, Hudbay referred to a “tentative agreement” with IAM, but IAM denied promising to recommend the offer.

On its website Monday, IAM outlined the reasons it went on strike, including concerns over wages, the length of grievances and the company’s use of contractors.

Monday’s vote on the offer saw 85 per cent of members cast ballots in Flin Flon and Snow Lake.

The three-year offer would have increased IAM member wages by $4 an hour, among other improvements.
