The province isn't to touch Manitoba Hydro profits until the corporation's financial picture brightens, the Public Utilities Board declared last week. The announcement comes two years after the government took a $203-million dividend from Hydro in a move heavily criticized by the opposition Tories. Given that two years of drought have put Hydro in the red, Energy Minister Tim Sale said "it is unlikely to the point of absurdity" that the province would take more money at this point. Of Hydro's $10 billion in assets, 86 per cent are reportedly owned by the bank. The Public Utilities Board wants that figure to be down to 75 per cent before the province takes any more money.
