Hudbay’s largest union is recommending members accept a tentative deal with the company as three days of ratification voting begin Saturday.

USW Local 7106 informed members of the tentative deal Tuesday. Details were not released until information meetings scheduled for yesterday, after The Reminder went to press.

“We are glad that USW 7106 negotiation team has chosen to recommend our final offer,” said Rob Winton, head of Hudbay’s Manitoba operations.

“We are optimistic that employees will ratify the deal with their committee’s recommendation, and are prepared for any outcome.”

USW, which has about 650 members, scheduled information meetings in Creighton for yesterday and for Snow Lake today.

Voting will take place in Flin Flon on Saturday and Monday, and in Snow Lake on Sunday and Monday.

The tentative deal followed three scheduled days of conciliation between Hudbay and USW, whose members okayed a strike mandate last week.

Word of the tentative agreement was greeted with cautious optimism by several residents and USW members who spoke to The Reminder.

Given the union’s size, a strike by USW would have the capability of shutting down Hudbay’s Flin Flon-Snow Lake operations.
