Hudbay waste site fire prompts investigation

Hudbay was investigating after a fire broke out at a waste disposal site at its Flin Flon operations on Tuesday.

Hudbay was investigating after a fire broke out at a waste disposal site at its Flin Flon operations on Tuesday.

The material at the site included consumables such as paper, cardboard and wood, said Rob Winton, vice-president, Manitoba Business Unit for Hudbay.

“The fire has been contained and will be fully extinguished shortly,” Winton said late Tuesday afternoon.

There had been questions as to whether the fire would impact air quality at 777 given the proximity to the downcast air system for the mine.

Winton said 777 did not need to bring workers up from underground.

“All employees remained at their work site underground and air quality was assured by managing the two main downcast sources,” he said.

Winton reported Wednesday morning that there had been no update as to the cause or source of the fire.

“Investigations will be completed internally and shared with the appropriate regulators.”
